For the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, join Docent Carol Lacoss for a guided reading and discussion to learn why The Great Gatsby is considered to be one of the most beautifully written novels of the 20th century.
Wednesday, July 9 & 16, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This is a two-session program. Click here to register.
During Week 1 we will:
1. Take a close look at the Luminist and Impressionist paintings in the NBMAA permanent collection.
2. Identify themes and stylistic techniques in the novel that parallel the visual arts.
3. Read Chapter 1 aloud with guided questions and discussion focusing on the theme of hope and the beauty of the language.
4. Learn why the novel is one of the most esteemed works of the 20th century.
After the first class, you will read chapters 2 - 9 with guided questions about style and meaning for each chapter.
During Week 2 we will:
1. Have a discussion of chapters 2 - 9 focusing on why The Great Gatsby is considered a beautifully written work of art and why 100 years later it continues to inspire hope in the American dream.
2. Look at the paintings a second time to see the connections between written and visual imagery and the beauty they each capture.
