Distinguished Lecture | Norman Rockwell and the Power and Process of Published Art: An Evening with Curator Stephanie Haboush Plunkett and Award-Winning Illustrator Tim O’Brien

Description

Catharine M. Rogers Lecture Series
Thursday, October 23, 6-7 p.m.
Hidden in plain sight, illustration has, through the centuries, transformed publications, functional objects, and digital platforms into message-bearers conveying a wide range of ideas that have reflected and shaped an ever-changing world. Illustrators are called upon to act as visual problem-solvers while remaining true to their personal artistic aesthetics.
Presented in conjunction with the Museum's current exhibition, Norman Rockwell: From Camera to Canvas, this discussion brings illustrator Tim O’Brien and Norman Rockwell Museum Chief Curator Stephanie Haboush Plunkett together to explore how illustrators approach their work while embracing this challenge. A true modern master of American illustration, Tim O’Brien has described himself as a “traditional oil painter,” a sentiment that belies his brilliance as a cutting-edge visual storyteller for our times. He will offer insights into the ways that realist illustrators like Rockwell and others work, the methods that they use, and the value of human-made art in the age of AI.
About Stephanie Haboush Plunkett:
Stephanie Haboush Plunkett is the Chief Curator and Rockwell Center Director of the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the curator of many exhibitions relating to Norman Rockwell and the art of illustration, including What, Me Worry? The Art and Humor of MAD Magazine; Tony Sarg: Genius at Play; Imprinted: Illustrating Race; Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms; Inventing America: Rockwell and Warhol; and The Unknown Hopper: Edward Hopper as Illustrator. She leads the Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies, an institute devoted to the study of illustration art. Drawing Lessons from the Famous Artists School; Norman Rockwell: Drawings, 1911-1976; Imprinted: Illustrating Race; Tony Sarg: Genius at Play; and Leo Lionni: Storyteller, Illustrator, Designer are recent publications. She hold an MFA/Illustration as Visual Essay degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and has held positions at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and Heckscher Museum of Art.
About Tim O'Brien:

Tim has created covers for most major book publishers, including the iconic Hunger Games series. In 2022, Tim formed a coalition of illustrators to urge illustration competitions not to include generative AI images.
