For generations, Native people have decorated clothing and items with materials found in nature, such as shells, stones, seeds, and porcupine quills. In recent centuries, multi-colored glass beads have become a favorite medium, as well. Join artist and educator Eva Newell (Pokanoket Tribe, Pokanoket Nation) for a beading workshop in which participants will make a beaded medallion that incorporates the brick stitch technique. This technique allows for complex patterns and interesting designs and is often used to make earrings and other jewelry. Choose from one of several patterns and spend an afternoon making a unique project while learning about the history and culture of the Pokanoket people. Supplies will be provided if you wish to turn your project into a keychain or pendant.
Eva Wunnehteou Newell is a resident of Beacon Falls, CT, and a member of the Pokanoket Community of Bristol Rhode Island. The Pokanokets are locally recognized in several town land acknowledgements as a historical Indigenous Community but is not a Federally Recognized Tribe. The State of Rhode Island does not have an official State Recognition Process but has recognized the Pokanokets in State Proclamations as the historically documented people who welcomed the Pilgrims.
Ms. Newell has AFA and AS degrees from Housatonic Community College, and both BS and MS degrees from Southern Connecticut State University. She has instructed adults in the traditional crafts of coil basketry and beadwork at the Institute for American Indian Studies and the Brookfield Craft center. But Ms. Newell is best known for her hand-cut, stained glass mosaic story vases that depict Pokanoket Legends and culture on vases and wall hangings, for which she has won numerous awards. Her mosaics can be viewed at the Plimoth Patuxet Museum in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, Connecticut, and the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut.
