Description

What is form in art, and how does it shape our understanding of an artist’s vision? As one of the seven elements of art, form can refer to three-dimensionality—whether geometric or organic—but it can also describe the physical nature of a work, such as a painting, drawing, or sculpture.
In this engaging Gallery Talk, we’ll explore how artists use form to convey their vision, what they observed, and how they guide us, the viewers, to interpret their work. Through an examination of 3-4 pieces from the NBMAA’s permanent collection, we’ll interactively discuss:
  • How form creates depth and dimensionality.
  • The role of form in defining the physical characteristics of an artwork.
  • How an artist’s use of form shapes meaning and perception.
Gain a deeper appreciation for the artistic process and the choices that shape what we see.
